Nick Clegg calls for investigation of abuse claims

Allegations of killings, torture and abuse in Iraq contained in leaked US military logs "need to be looked at", Nick Clegg said today.

The deputy prime minister said any suggestion that the rules of war had been broken or torture had been condoned were "extremely serious".

The almost 400,000 secret US army field reports show two cases of alleged involvement of British troops..........

G20 has to show FX pact packs meaning

Excited talk of currency wars has given way to an uneasy truce, but what has so far been a phony war could yet break out into outright hostilities.

The statement thrashed out among finance ministers of the Group of 20 leading economies in South Korea at the weekend did no more than paper over the radically different views of the two main belligerents -- the United States and China............

U.S. skirts nuclear deal; no mediation on Kashmir

The United States has refused to be forthcoming on Pakistan's request for a civil nuclear deal, similar to the one with India, and made clear that it will not mediate on the Kashmir issue.

Britsh soldier 'killed Iraq girl aged eight as she played'

British soldier shot dead an eight-year-old Iraqi girl as she played in the street, it was claimed yesterday.

The explosive allegation was made at a press conference about the secret "war logs" from the US military released by the whistleblowing Wikileaks website. Lawyer Phil Shiner said the murder happened while soldiers were handing out sweets to children.

U.S. strikes at the heart of Taliban leadership

MAQUR, AFGHANISTAN - October has been a calamitous month for the Taliban guerrillas waging war from sandy mountains and pistachio forests in this corner of northwestern Afghanistan.

The first to die was their leader, Mullah Ismail, hunted down and killled by U.S. Special Operations troops. Next came the heir apparent, Mullah Jamaluddin, even before he could take over as Taliban "shadow"........

U.S. negotiate heart of Taliban leadership

Secretary Clinton: Good evening. This is such a great treat, personally, to be back in San Francisco. And it's somewhat disconcerting, because this is only the third place in the

United States that I have spoken, since I became Secretary of State and - (laughter) - (applause) - the first place, which some may question whether it still is in the United States is, of course, Washington - (laughter) - where I have spoken several times and in Hawaii on my way to Asia. I have been invited to come to the Commonwealth Club many times over the years and was unable to accept that kind invitation, but I thought it would be an appropriate time for me to have this.......

Pakistan get 2bn-dollar military aid,pay 10bn interest to IMF,World Bank

Washington, Oct 24 (ANI): While the US administration has repeatedly pledged support for civilian rule in Pakistan, the two million-dollar military aid pledge at the latest round of the US-Pak strategic dialogue shows that it is also keen to meet the wish-lists of the army, which has long been a major player in Pakistan and provides vital logistical support for forces in Afghanistan.
They are laughing at?,

Pakistan's Army Chief General Ashfaq Kayani was unusually public last year in his criticism of Washington's five-year, 7.5 billion-dollar civilian aid package, calling it undue foreign interference, the Dawn reported.

Last Friday, in the wake of the latest tensions between the war partners, US President Barack Obama's administration announced it would seek another two billion dollars in aid for Pakistan- this time destined for the military.

Teresita Schaffer, a former US diplomat who had served in Islamabad, said the US faced the problem of doing a balancing act between working with the military and supporting civilian institutions.

"The US routinely has trouble figuring out exactly where that line belongs and how to stay on the right side of things," said Schaffer, Director of the South Asia program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

"Partly that's because the military in Pakistan is a can-do institution, much more so than the civilians," she said, adding, "This is partly theatrics, but we as a people are magnetically drawn to an institution and a leader who says, 'Yeah, I can help you with what you really want to get done.'"

The US Congress needs Congressional approval on the two billion-dollar military aid, which would be spread over five years.

While the Kerry-Lugar-Berman Act won wide backing last year, some US lawmakers have since voiced impatience at what they perceive as ingratitude from Pakistan. Other lawmakers have accused it of being too cozy with Afghanistan's Taliban, and faulted Islamabad's strategic focus on rival India, the paper said.

Lisa Curtis, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation and former US policymaker on South Asia, said a more critical test for military assistance to Pakistan might come next year.

"We are entering a somewhat new phase in US military assistance to Pakistan when for the first time we're actually seeing the aid conditioned on Pakistan meeting benchmarks," Curtis said. (ANI)

Korean Grand Prix

The Korean Grand Prix (Korean: 코리아 그랑프리) is a Formula One race to be held in South Korea. After months of speculation, on October 2, 2006 it was confirmed that the event would actually take place in 2010, and would be hosted by the Korean International Circuit, set to be built between 2007 and July 2010. It has also been revealed that the race will be promoted by a public-private company. The deal is for seven years with a five year option that would ensure the race to be held until 2021.

Despite this earlier confirmation, the South Korean Grand Prix was not included on any of the provisional 2010 calendars floated by Formula One Management. Following approval of funding for the event, however, Korea was given the date of 17 October on the 2010 calendar published by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) on 21 September 2009. On December 10, 2009, the organisers of the event announced that they were on schedule, with a plan to finish the circuit on July 5, 2010, though they admitted that their largest problem lay in finding accommodation for all Formula One staff and spectators. The organisers also ruled out the possibility of staging the race at night until they have more knowledge of and experience in running a Grand Prix. Despite all the confirmation there was still a risk that the circuit might not be on time, however this was denied by the race promoter who said that the circuit was ahead of schedule.

After several postponements, the FIA scheduled a final inspection of the circuit on 11 October 2010, 13 days before the Korean Grand Prix was scheduled to begin. After the FIA inspection, Race Director Charlie Whiting declared that the race will go ahead.

Formula One drivers commented positively on the new circuit before the race weekend got under way, with several commenting that it looks like an interesting, challenging track.
