Silver Swings at Forex

Currencies traders and analysts put forward a large range of flaky explanations for an unexpected run higher in the dollar late Tuesday.

“Errrr dunno. Flows?” was the wobbliest, and yet most frequent explanation.

“Flows”–people buying dollars–would of course push the dollar up, and one-off big deals do sometimes have this effect. But it didn’t smell right at the time, as the boost to the dollar was too broad and too big.

Barack Obama in Indonesia appeals for Muslim-Christian tolerance

Barack Obama was in wistful mood today on his return to Indonesia, where he spent part of his childhood. He reminisced about mango trees, flying kites, running alongside paddy fields, buying satay from street vendors and catching dragonflies.

He spoke too of the tolerance Indonesians had shown the foreign child brought up in their midst, and the tolerance needed today to eradicate the mistrust that had built up over the years between Muslims and Christians.

He was speaking at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, in the second major speech of his presidency reaching out to the Muslim world. The first was in Cairo last year.

But there was little sign of tolerance on US conservative websites, where there were derogatory comments about the visit. Pictures of the Obamas visiting the Istiqlal mosque in Jakarta are likely to surface on websites propagating the myth that the president is a secret Muslim.

This belief is based partly on reports that he attended a Muslim school in Indonesia,

Broward School Board Continues Lawyer Fiasco

The Broward County School Board has a bad case of emeritus.

You might think that after the stink caused by the Broward County School Board's plan to give outgoing Ed Marko a $266,000 salary to serve as general counsel emeritus (for the unwashed that's pronounced ih-MEH-ri-tus, not really like a disease) after he leaves his position, the board members might just throw that idea out the window.

Gottlieb a no-show.
Yeah, you'd be wrong. Today -- moments ago, in fact -- the board voted 5-2 to approve the position for Marko, though the salary is still up in the air. That'll be hashed out later.

They pushed the controversial item through, mind you, despite the fact that four new board members will be seated at the next meeting and should probably have their say on this controversial issue. And the new members will have a say later; it'll be a decent litmus test for some of them.

China Still Bans Rare Earths for Japan

HONG KONG — The Chinese government is continuing to block shipments of crucial strategic minerals to Japan, according to industry executives, analysts and a Japanese official.
The blocked shipments of minerals known as rare earths, despite previous signals that China was lifting the ban, could increase tensions at the meeting of the Group of 20 leading economic powers, now under way in Seoul. And it could place China at odds with Germany, which has been an outspoken critic of the rare earths policy but has recently been an ally of China’s on a separate matter that is a hot topic for the G-20 — the weak United States dollar.

The continuation of China’s unannounced embargo against Japan highlights the delicate balance that Beijing officials are trying to strike as world leaders converge on
