Two people were killed in a school bus accident on Highway 44 near Grey Summit around 10:15 this morning.
Police said one of the victims was a female child on a bus, and the other was the driver of a GMC sport-utility vehicle. 35 other students have been sent to St. Louis Children's Hospital, and 6 others have been transported to other area hospitals.
Two buses were carrying 8th grade band members from St. James heading to 6-Flags Amusement Park.
Police say a Volvo tractor trailer was stopped in traffic due to road work, when the vehicle was rear ended by the GMC sport-utility vehicle. The first bus driver reported to police that he/she was checking their rear-view mirror, while trying to avoid a vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder, when they rear ended the already stopped GMC sport-utility vehicle killing the driver. The second bus then rear-ended the first, resulting in a female band members' death.
The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of next-of-kin.
