Corning prepares Gorilla Glass production for large-screen LCD TVs
Gorilla Glass is well-known among mobile users for making their handset screens much tougher and resilient to the occasional drop or recurring hits against keys and change in a pocket. But manufacturer Corning is eyeing bigger screens for the future.
A posting on the Corning website explains that “sleek, ultra-thin edge-to-edge” LCD TVs are about to get Gorilla Glass:
With its pristine surface enabling a crisp, clear viewing experience, Gorilla is uniquely suited to fulfill the demanding optical requirements of high-definition and 3-D TV. And because it’s infused with strength at the molecular level, it can better withstand everyday damage, such as scratches and accidental impact.
If it was just TV we watched then there would be little need for tough glass, but when you consider Wii Remotes, and the forthcoming PlayStation Move, gamers may appreciate some extra protection against flying remotes.
Corning have not yet said whether any TV manufacturers have signed up for its tough glass. With videos like this on YouTube though, we’re sure a few of them will be looking into using it as a preventative solution:

Matthew’s Opinion
We all remember seeing those painful screenshots being uploaded soon after the release of the Wii showing 50″ plasma TVs destroyed. Nintendo responded by releasing wrist straps and extra-grippy plastic covers for the remotes. But do we all use those?
TV manufacturers will surely be interested in Gorilla Glass as it forms an additional feature they can advertise. TVs can be scratch and hit resistant while retaining a very clear picture. You only need look at popular mobile phones for proof of that.
Will there be a price premium for a Gorilla Glass TV? You can bet on it, but I think people will pay it for some extra peace of mind, especially if there’s kids in the house.
