Protestors in some towns in Wyoming, Kansas and Tennesee said they would burn Korans on the anniversary of 9/11. Rev. The move would copy Florida Rev. Terry Jones proposed plan.
The much-ballyhooed Koran burning inFlorida may have been called off, but other copycats that flew under the radar are still planning to burn Islam's holy book tomorrow.
It has also sparked violent protests around the world.
Protestors in some towns in Wyoming, Kansas and Tennessee are following Pastor Terry Jones' suit. The Florida religious leader has come under an international firestorm since he said he would burn Korans on the anniversary of 9/11.
Rev. Bob Old of Springfield, Tenn., said he planned to burn the Koran Saturday. Old, who was inspired by Jones, said unlike the Florida religious leader, he wouldn't back down.
"I will be burning a Koran, I'm not going to change my mind no matter who calls me," Old told the Tennessean.
In Topeka, Kan., members of Westboro Baptist Church, promised they would hold a Koran-burning if Jones' Dove World Outreach Center cancels theirs.
According to Ocala.com, the church issued a news release.
"WBC burned the Koran once – and if you sissy brats of Doomed America bully Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center until they change their plans to burn that blasphemous tripe called the Koran, then WBC will burn it (again), to clearly show you some things," the release read.
And in Cheyenne, Wyo., protestor Duncan Philip said he'd rally against the location of the proposed mosque near Ground Zero by burning a copy of the Koran on the steps of the his state's capitol Saturday.
Philip told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that if there's a rule against burning, he'd rip up a copy of the Koran and move the burning to a private business.
Protests against Jones have turned violent, and even deadly abroad. A Muslim demonstrator was shot dead and several others were wounded at a NATO base in northeast Afghanistan when 10,000 gathered on Friday. The incident is still under investigation.
There have also been demonstrations in Pakistan, India and Indonesia.
It's still unclear if Rev. Jones will hold his rally. On Thursday, the Florida religious leader backtracked and called off the Koran burning after several officials, including President Obama, urged him to do so. Jones said he was under the impression that the controversial, planned mosque near Ground Zero would be moved in exchange for the cancellation.
But Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, founder of the mosque project, said there was no plan to move the mosque, and Jones has since said he is undecided about the burning. Jones will reportedly go to New YorkSaturday to meet with Rauf.
He told CBS' "The Early Show" on Friday that "Right now, we have called the event off, based upon the offer that the Imam gave us." The pastor's statements left open the possibility that the Koran burning could still take place Saturday evening.
