Reggie Garrett, WO-S quarterback dies

Reggie Garrett dies,

Reggie Garrett, quarterback for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs, was pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Baptist-Orange at 9:30 p.m. Friday night, according to hospital spokeswoman Mary Poole.

The West Orange-Mustang quarterback collapsed on the sideline in the first half against the Jasper Bulldogs at Dan Hooks Stadium. He had just thrown his second touchdown pass of the game giving the Mustangs a 21-0 lead. People on the sideline said that he appeared to have had a seizure.

Garrett lay motionless as Acadian Ambulance Service personnel removed his jersey, shoulder pads and his face mask was cut from the helmet. A hush fell over Dan Hooks Stadium as Mustang teammates took a knee and Garrett was removed from the field.

The game resumed to a 27-6 victory but before the conclusion what was hoped to be just a rumor of Garrett's death was being talked about in the stadium and football fields across Southeast Texas.
The "rumor" was in fact true.

Garrett arrived at the emergency room 8:30 p.m. and pronounced dead an hour later. An autopsy has been ordered and the death is being investigated.

Garrett was a second-year varsity starting quarterback and Mustang team leader.
