United Kingdom health warned against orange fake tans

United Kingdom health officials are warning people not to use a tanning product you inject into your skin to get a tan because it will make you bright orange.

The Druglink Street Trends report said Melanotan leaves people looking "like they've been Tango'd" — a reference to an orange-flavoured pop, the U.K.'s Daily Mail reported.

The product — nicknamed "jabbatan" — can be purchased online or under the counter at health clubs and costs about $400 for a container of powder, which is mixed in sterile water.

Users inject themselves with the tanning substance daily until their skin has reached the desired colour, then use weekly boosters for upkeep, the newspaper reported.

"Melanotan has become fashionable with some women who are naive about the risks and lose any concept of how tanned they look," the report said.

But medical experts warn Melanotan can cause an increase in blood pressure, and can change the look of moles, which could lead skin cancer to be missed or wrongly diagnosed. There are also reports it increases a person's libido.
