Caution wasn't thrown to the wind, but lust ran more rampant on the runway.
Famed New York designer Carmen Marc Valvo and Saks Fifth Avenue at Utica Square brought his glamorous fall 2010 collection for the 16th annual Pink Ribbon event, "Fashion a Cure," for Monday's lunch and dinner extravaganzas - all to benefit Tulsa Project Woman.
Earlier this year, when people left his fall 2010 show at NASDAQ during New York Fashion Week, "they thought it was a Bergman film," he said during a phone interview from New York before he arrived in Tulsa this week.
Actually, his collection was inspired by "Lust, Caution," the Chinese World War II-era espionage thriller by famed director Ang Lee. The designer's creative director asked him if he'd ever seen the film, which he hadn't.
After viewing it, "I was like, 'Oh my God, this is perfect, perfect,' " said Valvo, who knew then and there he wanted to incorporate an Asian theme into his collection, renowned each season for celebrating and flattering a woman's curves.
Of course, he didn't want to be over the top.
"Anything, if you're not careful, can become cliche," he said, having avoided stereotypical themes involving dragons, pagodas and gold embroidery.
Instead, he performed his usual balancing act between understated luxury and cinematic sass, with many a look gleaming just as Hollywood bright as it did Shanghai shine.
The audience of well-clad women - and, yes, a few local firefighters - applauded every gown, with louder exceptions, including Valvo's crimson one-shoulder satin and crepe peplum gown. Others arousing attention were his fabulous furs that practically glowed in the runway light.
Frequent fedoras fueled the Tinseltown flame, as did fine, caviar-bead work, meticulous hand-detailing, and jeweled necklines and shoulders on rich lacquer black and Oriental jewel tones.
You can see these dazzling pieces yourself Tuesday at Saks Fifth Avenue in Utica Square. For more, call Saks, 744-0200.
