Similarly to the last time he took the stage, Lesnar will be facing a foe who doesn’t have a propensity to go past the opening stanza. Prior to UFC 116, Shane Carwin held a perfect 12-0 mark with all of his fights ending within the first five minutes.
A 2ndRound arm-triangle choke quickly changed that.
Velasquez’s resume isn’t quite as extensive as Carwin’s, although it’s just as decorated. The Mexican-American holds an immaculate 8-0 record, with seven of his victories coming by way of (T)KO and one unanimous decision.
Five of his W’s have come within the 1stRound. He’s collected two wins in the middle round, to go with his one decision.
Velasquez has never finished a foe in the 3rdRound and Saturday signifies his first opportunity at a five round championship affair.
Lesnar, on the other hand, owns a dominant 5-1 record, with a pair of wins coming by some form of knockout. He’s earned two of his victories by way of submission and one via unanimous decision.
The former WWE stud’s triumphant mixed martial arts debut ended in the 1stRound. He’s collected three of his wins in the second stanza, with none ending in the third.
Lesnar’s sole blemish came in a 1stRound submission loss to Frank Mir in his UFC debut back in February 2008. He’s never gone into the championship rounds since donning Octagon gold.
While the odds of this blockbuster brawl going the distance are bleak – just ask the Gambling Gods – it doesn’t mean fans won’t be getting bang for their buck by ordering the pay-per-view event. A fast ending usually equates to a spectacular finish, so don’t fret over dropping $54.99 (HD is a must for this one, so I tacked on the extra 10 bones).
UFC 121 will be jumping off this evening inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
