Bute Flattens Brinkley in Montreal

IBF super middleweight champ Lucian Bute remained unbeaten tonight in Montreal as he successfully defended his crown against a game, but over-matched Jesse Brinkley.

Bute (27-0, 22 KOs) took his time from the start, using his jab to get a feel for what Brinkley was bringing to the table while the challenger found it difficult to get on the inside. After a slow 1st and 2nd round, Bute stunned Brinkley in the third and followed it up in the fifth by hurting him again, this time with a left to the body. Moments later, Bute caught Brinkley (35-6, 22 KOs) square in the stomach, sending him down to his knees.

Brinkley, Yerington, Nevada, struggled to make it to his feet but managed to do so and survived the round.
The 8th round was all Bute as he toyed with Brinkley throughout the round before sending him down again with a left to the nose. Brinkley again made it to his feet but was saved by the round - it would be the last time he'd hear the bell.

The 9th round saw Bute biding his time while Brinkley began to chase the champion around the ring. Just as Brinkley tried coming in close along the ropes, Bute unleashed yet another left uppercut to the nose that sent Brinkley down and flat on his back. Brinkley himself waved his arm to signal he had enough and the fight was finally called off.

It was revealed early on in the fight that Cameron Dunkin, manager of former middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik, had told ESPN that a move up to 168 pounds is a possibility in 2011 to challenge Bute for his title.

In the co-featured bout, Adrian Diaconu was looking to shake off a 10-month lay off against Omar Sheika. In the 2nd round, Sheika unloaded with a right hook that sent Diaconu down to the canvas. He managed to get to his feet and proceeded to outbox Sheika for the remainder of the bout. In the end, Diaconu walked away with a unanimous decision win.
