Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon 2010 , South Africa

Description
Do it! Follow in the footsteps of the San in one of the world's most beautiful deserts. Are you ready for the 'Big Daddy? Do you need a new adventure in your life? Become a human camel for seven days and trek across 250 kilometres of arid terrain in temperatures reaching in excess of 40 degrees C. The 'Big Daddy' of South African marathon running has earned its place in the international calendar of extreme marathons, drawing competitors from all over the globe.

The event takes place in the wild Great Kalahari Desert not far from the stunning Augrabies Falls and fertile vineyards of the Gariep River. The route crosses the Augrabies Falls National Park, private game parks including Khamkirri, Thorntree and Dabaras and private farmlands. Seasoned athletes and determined adventurers alike will find it a daunting challenge - day and night temperatures contrast radically from above 40 c and dropping to below 5. The organisers supply the participants with overnight camps, water, professional medical backup, sports physios, check points at every 10kms, and an experienced crew who look after the participants needs. Apart from that, participants have to be self-sufficient and lug their essential kit.

On the back of a two legged camel? Runners are required to carry a backpack, sleeping bag, overnight clothing, torch and spare batteries, sunglasses, hat/cap, insect net to cover face or a Buff, blister kit, toilet paper, rehydrate sachets (minimum 6), sun block lotion, whistle, mirror, knife, 2 x 750ml water containers, antiseptic cream, strapping, space blanket and safety pins. In addition to this load some luxuries are recommended to make life a little more comfy - a sleeping mat, additional 300ml water bottle, spare cotton shorts, socks (7 pairs), spare T-shirt, small towel, soap, sandals, face cloth, pot and spoon, underwear, big plastic bag (in case of rain), gaiters, foot plasters, insect repellent, toothpaste, toothbrush, container bags - e.g. Ziplocs and a tracksuit (parachute cloth).
