Police Block Times Square

NEW York police have blocked access to the area around bustling Times Square due to what they called a "suspicious vehicle".

"There is a suspicious vehicle, close to 43rd Street and 8th Avenue," a police spokesman said today.

Police blocked the street and were investigating, the spokesman said without providing more details.

A failed bomber, Faisal Shahzad, was sentenced October 5 to life in prison after trying to blow up his 4WD in the heart of the tourist district.

The 30-year-old Pakistan-born naturalised American pleaded guilty last June to the botched bombing, which officials said could have claimed dozens of lives had the crude device not fizzled without igniting.

He admitted to parking the car packed with fireworks, petrol and propane on one of New York's busiest streets,

and vowed during his sentencing hearing that it was only a first salvo in America's "war with the Muslims".
