An Italian Seaside Town, Castellammare di Stabia, has proposed a ban on wearing revealing clothing including miniskirts and low-cut jeans when walking in public around the Castellammare di Stabia area. The ban is aimed at restoring higher standards of public decency and cracking down on anti-social behaviour.,

The Mayor of the area, Luigi Bobbio, who represents the centre-right People of Freedom party, was recently handed down additional power by the Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s government. Mayor Bobbio has drafted the proposed new regulations as a means of putting this extra power to work.

The Mayor described the new regulations as a means of promoting improved civil co-existence as well as restoring urban courtesy. The potential ban would prohibit wearing any type of clothing considered to be too revealing.

Miniskirts and low-cut jeans are specific clothing items that will not be acceptable under the new dress code. Offenders of the new proposed dress code could face fines ranging anywhere from 25-500 euros or $35-$696.

The Mayor also plans to prohibit other actions considered to be bad behavior, unruly, or disorderly. Some rowdy behaviors that are slighted to be banned under the new regulation include playing football in public places, participating in blasphemy and sunbathing.

Some residents feel that these new laws and regulations could aid in lowering cases of sexual harassment by confronting anti-social behaviour and fighting crime. Other areas in Italy have imposed similar laws which ban such activities as kissing in vehicles, making sandcastles, feeding stray cats, operating lawn mowers on the weekends or wearing wooden clogs.
