Tom Bosley was a "wonderful artist" and made the cast of Happy Days laugh, Ron Howard, who played his on-screen son Richie Cunningham on the series, says about the late actor.
Bosley died of a staph infection on Tuesday at his home in Palm Springs, California. He was 83.
"Tom's insight, talent, strength of character and comic timing made him a vital central figure in the Happy Days experience," People magazine quoted Howard as saying.
"A great father and husband, and a wonderful artist, Tom led by example, and made us all laugh while he was doing it," Howard added. "My last conversations with Tom reflected the love of life and peace of mind that he always maintained throughout his full and rewarding life."
The family sitcom Happy Days was set in the 1950s but ran from 1974–1984. It also starred Henry Winkler, who played Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli.
"Tom was great," Winkler said in a statement, adding that he had spoken to Bosley lately and that he had sounded "strong".
"He was great to work with, great to play charades with," Winkler said. "He was part of the Happy Days baseball team that travelled - so great to travel with. Just a wonderful, wonderful gentlemen.. Talented, a great family man. This was a shock."
Bosley also played Sheriff Amos Tupper on Murder, She Wrote with Angela Lansbury and Father Frank Dowling on the Father Dowling Mysteries. He recently starred in the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy film The Back-up Plan.
