Verizon Data Voice Transmit

Verizon IPhone Won’t Transmit Data,

Voice Together, WSJ Reports

The iPhone to be sold by Verizon Communications Inc. when it becomes the second U.S. operator to offer the Apple Inc. device won’t allow users to send an e-mail or surf the internet while talking on the phone, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing Brian Higgins, a Verizon executive.

The New York-based telecommunications company uses a phone network called CDMA, which is used widely in the U.S. and less so in Europe and Asia, the newspaper said. The network requires more battery power than the one operated by AT&T Inc., now the sole iPhone network provider in the U.S., the WSJ reported. AT&T’s network can transmit data and voice information simultaneously, the newspaper said.
.
Apple Inc. will begin producing a CMDA version of the iPhone early next year, the WSJ said, citing people it didn’t name who are familiar with the matter. Twenty-three percent of iPhone users would consider switching to Verizon if given the chance, according to a survey by Credit Suisse Group AG cited by the newspaper.

A commercial solution allowing CMDA networks to carry data and voice at the same time will be commercially available in the first half of next year, the WSJ quoted Brad Shewmake, a spokesman for CMDA Development Group, as saying.
