Euro Falls Sharply Vs Dollar On Ireland Debt Concern

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The euro fell to a seven-week low against the dollar Tuesday--sinking below $1.350--as investors shuddered over the specter of the simmering euro-zone sovereign debt crisis coming to a boil.

Speculation swirled that fiscally strapped Ireland would soon request a bailout--something Ireland has denied. The uncertainty sent nervous investors fleeing riskier assets for the perceived safety of the dollar, which gained nearly across the board. The ICE Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against a trade-weighted basket of currencies, rose more than 1% to reach its strongest levels since late September.
