Tom Coughlin tried to claim he was just like anyone else while watching Michael Vick in the first half of the Eagles’ blowout of the Redskins.
“Let’s see, 35-0, 12 plays for Washington,” Coughlin recalled during his Wednesday morning press conference telling himself. “Just what everybody else was (thinking): Put the pencil down and become a fan.”
Shortly thereafter, a reporter followed up by asking if Coughlin could truly allow himself to be a fan watching Vick, knowing he’d be facing him this coming weekend.
“Not really,” Coughlin shot right back. “I got indigestion and stomach aches.”
So it will be all the way through Sunday night when the Giants attempt to stop Vick and the Eagles’ offense, which rolled up 59 points against Washington on Monday. After repeated questions about said offense, Coughlin replied, “They do have a defense, too.”
Of course they do, but it’s all about Vick and the offense right now. Coughlin ran down the obvious generalities of stopping Vick: contain him in the pocket, don’t play too much Cover-2 man (which forces defensive backs to turn their backs to Vick), and get through the max-protection looks the Eagles will show the Giants’ defensive line.
And…
“Try to get the 12th man out there. We’ve worked real hard on that,” Coughlin said, though he wasn’t referring to the fans, on account of it being a road game and on account of this follow-up statement: “I think the officials can give us one of those based on last week, maybe.”

There’s nothing new on C Shaun O’Hara (foot) and OL David Diehl (hip/hamstring).
“No news that you’re looking for or that I’m looking for,” Coughlin said. “(They say), ‘Doing well, feeling good.’ ‘Okay, good, let’s take a look at the list. Okay, you’re not practicing today.’”
TE Kevin Boss (back) is practicing and is “okay,” according to Coughlin. Boss suffered a lower-back bruise against the Cowboys.
OG Kevin Boothe (knee), LB Jonathan Goff (elbow) and DE Dave Tollefson (ankle) aren’t on the team’s pre-practice injury report and will work Wednesday.
DE Osi Umenyiora (knee) is taking his usual Wednesday off.
FB Madison Hedgecock (hamstring) is doing at least some work during practice, though how much he does during team drills won't be known until after practice.
