Royal wedding set to be bank holiday

UK Prime Minister said he wanted the occasion to be "a day of national celebration" and said he was in favour of the extra day off.

A spokesman for the couple said they had seen Mr Cameron's comments and were also in favour of a bank holiday, but had yet to settle on a date for the wedding.

When the Prince's father, the Prince of Wales, married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, the nation was granted a day off work. The wedding took place on a Wednesday. Mr Cameron told a committee of MPs: "There is a debate I think we ought to have – obviously not knowing what the date is yet – but whether there ought to be a bank holiday. I think if it's in the middle of the week it would be a very good idea to have a bank holiday."

He added: "Even if it's at a weekend I think there would be a great temptation to have a bank holiday, a day of national celebration to mark what is happening."
