Weekend storm could pack a wallop for the South, Southeast

A significant winter storm is forecast for the South and Southeast on Sunday and Monday, potentially wreaking travel havoc from Arkansas to the Carolinas. Snow will also whiten parts of New England, the Northwest and the northern Rockies.
Southern storm: After drenching parts of Texas with rain Saturday, the storm will tap cold air and spread snow, sleet and freezing rain across much of Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas on Sunday and into Monday.

If freezing rain occurs, some of the region could see an ice storm, including Atlanta, which would cause serious flight disruptions at the world's busiest airport. Along the Gulf Coast, all the precipitation that falls will be rain.

Once it moves out of the South, the storm could go straight off the Southeast coast and harmlessly out to sea late Monday, or possibly move up the East Coast. If the storm moves up the coast, it could spread heavy snow across the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday and into the Northeast and New England on Wednesday.

Snowy Northeast: Lingering snow from the storm that hit New York on Friday will fall across central New York into central New England Saturday and into northern New England on Sunday.

Mixed bag in the West: While the Southwest stays mainly dry, the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies will see rain and snow this weekend. Temperatures will remain cooler than average.

Limited warmth: The only warm spots across the country this weekend will be in far south Texas and south Florida, where highs will top out in the 70s both Saturday and Sunday.
