Early life
After attending the Greenfield Center School, Collins graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon in 1992. In the following year, Collins pursued a wide variety of interests, including a six-month job at NPR headquarters, National Public Radio, in 1995. He worked as a producer and copywriter on a show called Weekly Edition.
Collins also had a White House internship in the Office of Presidential Personnel in charge of selecting nominees for presidential appointments. He also worked in construction, and did an EMT certification course.
Collins then went on to the University of Chicago for undergrad, where he studied social theory. He took a year off from college and went to Nepal and Tibet, spending several months in seclusion at a monastery.
Personal life
In 2002, Collins married his high school sweetheart, Victoria Vantoch. He and his wife welcomed their first child, West Anaximander Collins, on September 23, 2010.
Collins had flirted with the idea of returning to politics. He briefly considered running for neighborhood council in Los Angeles before withdrawing his application. "I went to sit in on one of the meetings, and it was the most tedious, boring hour and a half of my life. So I withdrew my candidacy, and almost won in spite of that. I got 51 votes!"
When asked whether or not he believed in the existence of angels, Collins responds: "I can't say that I believe in angels but I can't say that I don't believe in angels. I'm open to the possibility of their existence although I don't have any verifiable empirical evidence that they do exist."
Collins is a published poet. So far, his poems including Baby Pants and Old Bones, have been published in three literary magazines and journals: the 2008 edition of the Columbia Poetry Review, Pearl Magazine and The California Quarterly 21.
Collins currently resides in Los Angeles in a house he built and designed himself.
In the summer of 2009, Collins had a crash on his bicycle going about 55 miles per hour, requiring a stay in the hospital. Whilst there, he had to undergo an MRI that showed a birth defect in his spine which is the reason for his flexibility that helped him get the role of Manny Skerritt in the TV show Nip/Tuck.
Collins is a regular poster on Twitter, and he has termed his followers on there his "minions". His page currently has over 100,000 followers. In December 2009, the actor asked his minions for ideas on how to stimulate the economy; in response, they created a non-profit site (now known as www.TheRandomAct.org) for the purpose of doing good works in the world, donating to charity, and volunteering for good causes in his name. Later that month, he won (by popular vote) the award for Best of Twitter 2009.
