As heavy snow moved into the area, some areas saw significant amounts of amounts of sleet, and the National Weather Service in Wilmington said that it had gotten several questions about how sleet forms when it is so cold outside.
[6:52 PM] We have seen lots of questions today about how sleet forms when it's very cold at ground level. The answer is that the air is actually much warmer about a mile above the ground.
