Transparency International Corruption

Report 2010

Te fair sannu ke,

Every Pakistani is familiar with the word "Corruption". Because they know there work can only be done in every department if they follow corruption, help corruption. It is impossible for an ordinary person to do his work by following the proper procedure in many Public departments. But from last few years after the end of Army regime the corruption perception has worsened especially the last year, as stated by the latest Transparency International Corruption report 2010. Though the 2009 Corruption Survey Report was an eye-opener, but this year it was shocking Khyber Pakhtoon Khawa Province (former N.W.F.P) beat all the provinces and has the highest rate of corruption in Pakistan. Here I am putting some of the highlights of this report.

* The report titled the National Corruption Perception Survey 2010 showed a high rise in corruption from 195 billion rupees in the year 2009 to 223 billion rupees in the year 2010.
* Bureaucracy and Police had maintained their ranking as the two of the most corrupt departments in public sector in 2010.
* Land administration departments were placed third in corrupt practices.
* Corruption in the judiciary, local government and education sectors has also increased as compared to the last year.
* Syed Adil Gilani chairman of TIP said that about 70 % of people believed that the previous military regime of General Pervez MusharrafPervez Musharraf was less corrupt then the present Pakistan People's Party (PPP) led coalition government.
* In terms of bribery, land administration was the most corrupt sector, where average bribe paid in each incident was 46, 414 rupees.
* KPK is highlighted to be the most corrupt of all the provinces.

CWG scam contributed to India''s slide in corruption index

New Delhi, Oct 27 (PTI)In the wake of reports that India has slid three ranks on the corruption index, BJP today alleged the huge "scam" in the Commonwealth Games had contributed to it and reiterated its demand for a JPC probe to bring out the truth. "The Commonwealth Games were expected to improve the prestige of the country. But India has gone down three rungs to 87th place in the Corruption Index. This has happened due corruption in Commonwealth Games," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said. Transparency International's latest report on Corruption Index places India at the 87th place. BJP maintained that truth can come out in the CWG scam only if a Joint Parliamentary Committee probes it. "The V K Shunglu Committee and the Prime Minister should take cognizance of this report. As we have said earlier, without a JPC probe it will not be possible to bring out the whole truth," he said. Asked if BJP felt the Prime Minister's office was involved in allowing corruption in CWG projects, he said "if Sheila Dikshit and Suresh Kalmadi were guilty of commission, then PMO is definitely guilty of ommission," Javadekar said. Alleging that the GOM for CWG and the committee of bureaucrats formed for the purpose of overseeing the Games preparations were also guilty, he said adding they held several rounds of meetings to discuss the issues. Some of the appointments were made directly by the PMO, he added. "All political players involved in corruption should also be investigated," he maintained. The Rajya Sabha MP had recently written a letter to the Prime Minister suggesting that the Shunglu Committee should be "serviced" by the Cabinet Secretariat and not the Sports Ministry as the latter is one of the "accused". BJP also suggested Prasar Bharti CEO B S Lalli come out with the "whole truth" about allotment of broadcasting contract to SIS Live, a UK-based company, for CWG coverage. Asked if BJP would support an impeachment motion in Parliament against Lalli, the party said its central leadership will take a call on the issue if and when required.PTI RC

Cost of War

Cost of War
Cost of War is a real-time cost estimation counter for the Iraq War and the Afghanistan War maintained by the National Priorities Project. As of June 1, 2010 both wars had a combined estimated cost of over 1 trillion dollars, separately the Iraq War had an estimated cost of 725 billion dollars and the Afghanistan War had an estimated cost of 275 billion dollars. The number is based on US Congress appropriations and does not include "future medical care for soldiers and veterans wounded in the war".

Exhibit

Based on National Priorities Project Cost of War concept, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) launched an exhibit title titled "Cost of War" in May 2007, at the close of the National Eyes Wide Open Exhibit. It features ten budget trade-offs displayed on 3x7 foot full-color vinyl banners. AFSC uses to cost of the Iraq War estimated by economists Linda Bilmes and Joseph Stiglitz in the article "Economic Costs Of The Iraq War: An Appraisal Three Years After The Beginning Of The Conflict", written in January 2006 that estimates the total daily cost of the Iraq War at $720 million . AFSC uses The National Priorities Project's per unit costs for human needs such as health care and education to make budget comparisons between the U.S. budget for human needs to "One Day of the Iraq War" . The ten banners read
One Day of the Iraq War = 720 Million Dollars, How Would You Spend it?
One Day of the Iraq War = 84 New Elementary Schools
One Day of the Iraq War = 12,478 Elementary School Teachers
One Day of the Iraq War = 95,364 Head Start Places for Children
One Day of the Iraq War = 1,153,846 Children with Free School Lunches
One Day of the Iraq War = 34,904 Four-Year Scholarships for University Students
One Day of the Iraq War = 163,525 People with Health Care
One Day of the Iraq War = 423,529 Children with Health Care
One Day of the Iraq War = 6,482 Families with Homes
