Behenein (Hindi: बहेनें) is an Indian television show produced by J. D. Majethia and shown on STAR Plus. It is the tale of 4 sisters, Purva, Smriti, Akashi and Anokhi who go through their adult lives facing obstacles along the way. It show the loving bond of sisterhood and is a great mix of love and comedy.

Broadcast history

Behenein debuted in February 2010. As the Indian Premier League season began and threatened to draw viewers away, the producers revealed their intention to introduce several plot twists, such as the revelation of the kidnapper of Smriti's baby, in order to keep the audience interested. Due to relatively good ratings, the channel planned to broadcast a four-hour recap in April, and is considering extending the show to one-hour episodes.

Synopsis

On the day of Purva's (the eldest sister) wedding, her parents room catches fire while they are inside and they die. After this incident, their father's sister, Neema Ben comes with her son to take care of the sisters. In truth, she wants her brother's property all for herself and leave the sisters homeless. But in her brother's will, he says that the property will go to Neema after all the 3 sisters,(as Smriti is married), get married and sign the will. Thus, begins the struggles of these Behnein (sisters) as their aunt tries to ruin their lives, and how they stay strong, as well as how Purva keeps all her sisters happy and safe. Smriti is driven insane by her mother in law and as a result she is admitted to mental hospital. Under these circumstances, marries Smriti's lawyer husband, Mihir, to take care of Smriti's son, Prem. As the time progresses Purva and Mihir begin to develop close feelings for one another. Amar, Purva's fiance, becomes heartbroken upon realizing the circumstances and is currently not shown in the serial. After some time, smriti ends up dying in a car accident, and Mihir and Purva take their relationship to another level. Anokhi is staying at her father's mansion happily, but Neema Ben plots to ruin Anokhi's life. She hires Samir, Anoki's love interest, to seduce Anokhi and impregnate her, thus being forced to marry her. When that plan fails, Neema Ben crashes Akashi's wedding day to her love, Kshitij when she hires a goon named Shamar Das to kidnap Akashi and marry her. After Akashi's forced "wedding", Shamar has taken photographs of the forced wedding Purva and Mihir get these photographs and know about Akashi's wedding with Shamar, which Akashi hid from them. Kshitij also received a copy of them. Kshitij refuses to accept her and marries someone else. To seek revenge, Akashi goes to Shamar's house to ruin his life, as she is his legal wife. Shamar's mother and sister become very close to Akashi, so Akashi begins to enjoy living there; Mihir, who is married to Purva, is fallen in love with her. Currently Smriti's look-a-like, Aastha has entered their life with a guy named Karan. Shamar Das goes on a ride with Akashi, and hits a tree. Akashi is bleeding. Recently Smriti got married to karan. Love blossoms between Akashi and Shamar as Shamar brings her an anklet out of his salary. They got along with fighting and Aastha (Smriti) is also enjoying her new life with Karan. Anokhi also finds a new love interest, Bhavesh karan's friend and slowly has started to fall for him. Meanwhile Ksitij has taken up courage and goes near Akashi to apologize her but Akashi rejects him and now has invited Shamar to her birthday party. Here it's revealed that Kshitij canceled his wedding with the other girl. Akashi and Mihir had a fight and now Akashi has left the Sanghvi house to Shamar's house as Mihir gave her too choices: Shamar das or his house. Anokhi's engagement ceremony is stopped as Bhavesh's sister has not arrived yet. Knwoing that she came 2 days earlier in order to surprise Bhavesh. Not finding her, they all are worried whether death encountered her. Aastha(Smriti) is upset as Mihir and Purva had an argument for the first time. It's also revealed that Jigna( Bhavesh's sister)'s death happened by an accident which encountered her. Shamar was responsible for this, but he didn't mean to do so. Only Karan and Smriti know this, but acceding to Smriti's request, Karan keeps this between them. But Akashi has started to have thoughts if Shamar was responsible for Jigna's death.

Characters

Purva Sanghvi: Purva is the eldest daughter of Sevantilal and Revati Shastri. Purva is an ideal daughter, sister, and friend. Purva is very selfless person. She respects her elders and loves her sisters a lot. She is also a great friend to Mihir and Amar. After her parents' death, Purva takes up responsibility for her sisters and now due to certain reasons she is married to mihir. She is now in love with him and cannot stay away from him. Purva has started to get worried if Akashi wants to accept Shamar for her husband and the changes in Anokhi when she met Bhavesh. She is currently pregnant with Mihir's child but hasn't told him about this yet.

Smriti Sanghvi né Shastri/ Aastha Mehra : Smriti is second daughter of Sevantilal and Revati Shastri. Smriti has very shy personality and get nervous quickly. Smriti too respects her elders and loves her sisters a lot. She is married to Mihir. Smriti and Mihir were "college sweethearts". As a result, Smriti got married before Purva. Although Mihir's mother is often unfair to her, Smriti still respects her a lot. Due to an accident during her pregnancy, Smriti often gets nervous breakdown. Mihir, however wasn't always by her side to support her, when his mother was troubling Smriti, she get's crazy and is admitted at the mental hospital. Due to a car accident, Smriti is known to have died. Later onwards, it's revealed that Smriti didn't die. She comes back as another character, Aastha, with her best friend, Karan. Only Anokhi knows that Aastha is actually Smriti, who disguises for the fact that Mihir and Purva are now married and love each other. The others don't know about this.

Akashi Das ne Shastri : Akashi is the third daughter of Sevantilal and Revati Shastri. She is also very caring, confident and vivacious sister and loves her sisters a lot. Akashi cares a lot about her looks. She is the most stylish among the sisters. Akashi is often outspoken. Unlike her sisters, Akashi speaks up against Nimaben, when she thinks Nimaben is being unfair to them. She thinks logically and does not get emotional very easily on a given situation, like her sisters do.She is married to Shamar Das after he kidnapped her. Before her boyfriend/fiancee was a guy called Kshitij whom she lost after her wedding with Shamar. She has a like-hate relationship with him. Now she is starting to feel for shamar and his family. Unknowingly she is starting to like shamar.

Anokhi Shastri : Anokhi is the youngest college going daughter of Sevantilal and Revati Shastri. Being the yongest, Anokhi is the most protected one. Anokhi is very effervescent and passionate about dancing. She learns dancing from Amar. She only knows Smriti's secret. She is the only sister who isn't married but is in love with Bhavesh Patel with whom her engagement has been announced.

Mihir Sanghvi : Mihir is the only son of Kamini. Mihir is a devoted son, brother, and husband. Mihir respects his elders and loves his sisters: Sheetal and Shalaka. Mihir loves and supports his wife, Smriti immensely. They were "college sweethearts". Mihir is a lawyer by profession.He is gradually falling in love with purva after smriti dies . He tells Purva that he loves her deeply and Smriti is hurt, He loves Smriti very much but later on falls deeply in love with Purva

Amar Patel : Amar was Purva’s best-friend and was suppose to get married to her but unfortunately purva got married to mihir and so now is heart-broken . He considers Purva’s family as his own family and is always there to support them. Amar morally supports Purva and her sisters when they have any problem. Amar is a choreographer by profession. He moves to a new town to help himelf get over Purva.

Sevantilal Shastri : Father of Purva, Smriti, Akashi and Anokhi.

Revati Shastri : Mother of Purva, Smriti, Akashi and Anokhi.

Nimaben : Nimaben is Sevantilal Shastri’s elder sister. Although she acts very nicely with the sisters, she does not like them at all. Nimaben along with her son Vishal, conspires against Shastri family to get their money. Also, when Revati and Sevanti are caught in a fire in their room and the door becomes locked, Nimaben decides not to save them and hides the key to the room, thus, Revati and Sevantilal die. Before Sevantilal’s death, he transferred all his property to her name, but she would get it only after Purva, Akashi and Anokhi got married. Nimaben also hires a guy (Samir) to marry and ruin Anokhi's life but fails, however, she is successful in hiring Shamar to kidnap Akashi and marry her.

Vishal : Vishal, Nimaben’s son, is also as manipulative and vicious as Nimaben. Like Nimaben, he only cares for money. Vishal often gambles money and loses it as well. As a result, he is often in debt and looking for ways to repay his debt by cheating people٫ Shamar's sister is in love with him and call him her "Rithwik".

Kamini : Kamini is Mihir’s mother. Kamini is also very possessive mother. As Mihir and Smriti are "college sweethearts", she is unhappy with Mihir and Smriti’s relationship. She never liked Smriti as her daughter-in-law. However, she lets Smriti stay at her house, as she is going to give birth to the heir of the family. Kamini also plans to get Mihir remarried as soon as she gets the family heir in her hands. She loves Purva as her daughter in law and persists Purva to personally get into Mihirs love life. She loves the fact that they both love each other.

Mansi: She was going to get married to Mihir and steal the Sanghvi Parivaar's Money and fame with her mom, Kamini's friend Usha. She came to the home only to get the cash. She lies to Kamini that Usha is ill and that's how she came. Knowing this, Purva ties Mansi to a chair on her wedding day and disguises to be her by putting the wedding veil over her face and that's how Purva and Mihir got married. Mansi could not control her anger and sputtered everything out(her plan) and stamped out of the Sanghvi house with Usha. She is a physiology student and was going to control Smriti in her little finger.

Samir: Anokhi's former love interest who was hired by Nimaben to marry Anokhi and ruin her life. The two meet at dancing class He meets Anokhi at Amar's dance class. But thankfully Purva knew about his secret and busted it in front of everyone. That day Anokhi slaps him on the face and dumped him right after she knew everything. Later he is arrested by the police. Even if he was arrested, he didn't tell that Nimaben hired him and she is still safe about it.

Shamar Das : Shamar is Akashi's husband, who abducted her on her wedding night and married her after being paid by Nimaben to do so. He is a very stubborn man living with his sister Manik, mother Gaumthi Kaki ( called as Gaumthi Aunty by Akashi) and brother Mehraman who is now married to Rashmi. Now he has started to get along with Akashi, who is adored by his family. He called Akashi "Chaukri Nijadh". His mother Gaumthi Kaki and Mani are servants at Kamini and Mihir's house and now he cares for Akashi a lot.

Karan Mehra: He is Aastha(Smriti)'s best friend and is in love with her, especially after she mentioned about them getting married. Recently he became a good friend of Mihir and calls him "Vakil Saheb" meaning (Lawyer). Recently he ans Smriti wed. He also tries to be a good husband to Smriti.

Bhavesh Patel: New guy in Anokh's life.handsome,cool,optimistic in nature. Friend of Karan Also has a crush on Anokhi and helps Mihir. Anokhi and Bhavesh both love each other and Mihir, Purva, Karan, and Smriti(Aastha) notice this and thus Mihir announces Bhavesh and Anokhi's engagement at Akashi's Birthday Party.
