Kaali- Ek Agnipariksha (Hindi- काली - एक अग्नि परीक्षा ) is an Indian Soap Opera that airs on STAR Plus at 11pm starting from September 13, 2010. It tackles the idea of sexual harrasement of women in India.

Story

Our story begins with the introduction of two families living in the city of Ghaziabad. The Mehta family comprising of Mr Veerender Mehta and his two children 16 year old Rachna and 11 year old Ansh is a simple, middle class family with middle class values and middle class dreams….well almost. Veerender’s daughter Rachna is a tennis talent and hopes to someday rise to international ranks. And the simple, bank employee Veerender takes it upon himself to fulfill this dream of Rachna’s. He knows his wife would have wanted him to do it. But other than this differentiation, they are like every other family living in the middle class neighborhood of Krishna Kunj.
The other family is that of Amar Nanda comprising of Amar and his wife Rajni and their two children 17 year old Varun and 16 year old Anu. Amar is a senior Engineer with a multinational company. He always thought Ghaziabad would never be good enough for him and still continues to look for avenues to move abroad. He considers his wife Rajni the biggest hurdle in his life. It’s almost as if to him, she symbolizes what is “not right” with his life. Right from her simple, average IQ to her acceptance of life as it is, irritates him. And he finds that reflected in his daughter Anu too and so keeps comparing her to his son Varun who is a version of himself…a topper, ambitious and smart.
The two families are related. Amar’s sister Veena was married to Veerender. But Amar used Veena’s death as an excuse to distance himself from the Mehta family. However the bond between Anu and Rachna is very deep…. And this irks Amar a lot.
Our story is the tale of these two families and what happens to them when disaster strikes in the form of a monster of a man called Keshav Thakral.
[edit]Characters

Rachana
Restless, full of energy and zest, fun loving. Rachana loved adventure and was always the first to volunteer for any activity that spelt excitement. Sometimes, older people and relatives would comment and lightly warn her father about Rachana’s rather free nature and unsuspecting attitude. It was only her father who knew that Rachana’s somewhat overt extrovert nature was actually just a cloak to cover her grief for her dead mother. Her mother had passed away when Rachana was 6 and she still had memories of her beautiful moments with cheerful mother. Rachana had almost developed a laughter that resembled her mother’s. And she loved to sing, though she was not gifted with a good voice like her mother was. Over the passage of time, though Rachana had turned more and more reclusive, at a point in time she almost became delusional, which is what led to her suicide eventually
Anu
Somewhat shy and reticent. Anu was also a good student but not very confident. She was sent to play by her father who insisted that Anu should do well in every aspect of life in order to compete with the world. Anu though never could muster the will to top at anything. It was her association with Rachana that actually brought a change in her personality. She was at first in awe of Rachana’s boldness and daring, slowly she started to emulate her, but never could really stand up on her own. It is only later after Rachana died that Anu got the courage to fight on her own. Therefore, when Anu got involved in the whole Rachana case thing, it was an uphill task for her to get past her own father. Her mother although supportive of her did not have enough courage to stand up to her husband. It is when Anu actually got media attention that her father started to respect what she is doing and then the whole family united.
Thakral
Thakral comes from that breed of people who have a pathological problem in understanding ethics and morality. He is extremely intelligent and totally debauch in his thinking. To him everyone is dispensable. Therefore he never hesitates to take advantage of people or situations even when things could go against him. Thakral wipes out the lives of several people without even a slight strain to his conscience. All because he believes he is the unchallenged lord…The Bahubali.
Sutradhar (Narrator)
Rachana's Mother the Narrator of Rachna’s story was a very calm natured female, very much like Mr. Mehta character. A mild sober personality, she was a classical singer and also held singing classes in her house. She loved white and pearl colors. She died in her late 20's in a road accident.
Rahul
Rachana’s younger brother. An extremely cute and talkative kid. The trials of the next few years turned him extremely bitter and silent. It is his wife Kavita who brought in a sense of hope and helped him continue with the fight.
Diwakar Pandey
Around 38. He is the SP of Ghaziabad area. Upright, serious and committed to his duty, nothing can corrupt Diwakar. He is seething with anger against the injustice in our society and does not hesitate to go all out against any wrong or wrong doer. He has learnt over his 15 years of service though that in order to get his work done, he needs to sometimes work with the system – he needs to play smart. Diwakar derives his moral strength and fearlessness from meditation. He is an introvert and never reveals his emotions to anyone. It is only through working on the Rachna case that he too evolves as a person, his tough exterior gets softened.
Amar
Amar was a higher up executive and quite ambitious. He however was a tad disappointed with his daughter Anu who did not display exceptional abilities in anything as such. His wife was a nice but rather average woman a little slow and something of a misfit in Amar’s corporate company. Their relationship was always slightly distant though she tried to be the ideal wife in every way. Anu’s siblings older brother Varun was a topper and Amar always compared the two.
