New Delhi, Sep 11: The festive spirit is running high all over India as people gear up to celebrate Eid and Ganesh Chaturthi on Saturday, Sep 11.
Indians got an extended weekend as a gift this festive season as Friday, Sep 10 was also declared a public holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is observed annually by Muslims with rigorous fasting and praying routine. Even though Sep 10 was an off, the Eid the celebrations will be held on Saturday, Sep 11 after the sighting of the moon.
In a rare coincidence, the Hindu festival of Ganesha Chaturthi also happens to fall on Saturday, Sep 11. The festival also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi and Ganeshotsav celebrates the birthday of the elephant headed son of Shiva and Parvathi - Lord Ganesha.
Lord Ganesha is believed to bestow his presence on Earth during the 10-day festival, which ends on Anant Chaturdashi.
Idols of various sizes, shapes, colours will be installed in households and on the road sides. After treating Ganesha with the best of the food and prayers for ten days, devotees will bid their adieus to the Lord by immersing the idols in water bodies.
