Imran Farooq life and death,
Imran Farooq عمران فاروق; June 14, 1960 – September 16, 2010) was a Pakistani politician and a prominent member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as well as being a former parliamentarian.
Personal life
He married Shumaila Nazar in London in 2004 and had two children. He had a Muhajir background. Imran Farooq was a doctor and had graduated from the Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1985.
Involvement in MQM
Farooq was one of the founders of the All Pakistan Mohajir Students' Organisation (APMSO), a forerunner of the MQM. When the MQM was established as a political party under Altaf Hussain in 1984, Farooq became the first secretary-general and convener. The Pakistan government sent the military into Karachi to crack down on the MQM in 1992 and Farooq went into hiding: he escaped to London in 1999 and claimed political asylum. He continued to organize the MQM from exile, although apparently had less influence in the years immediately after his marriage in 2004. Some differences emerged, sending Farooq into obscurity. Since then he had been living the life of a recluse, with no role in party affairs. He was reportedly wanted on a range of charges including murder although he insisted the claims were politically motivated.
NRO beneficiary
On Nov 22, 2009 the Pakistan government released the limited list of beneficiaries of a legal act called the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) which granted amnesty to politicians, political workers and bureaucrats who were accused of corruption, embezzlement, money-laundering, murder and terrorism between 1 January 1986 and October 12, 1999, the time between two applications of Martial Law. Two of the significant personalities of MQM occupied the first two slots on the list. According to the list, Farooq had the second highest number of cases withdrawn – 23 , including five on charges of murder and four on attempt to murder after MQM leader Altaf Hussain.,
Death of Imran Farooq,
He was found murdered near his home in exile in north London on the afternoon of 16 September 2010.
The Metropolitan Police said they were called to a "serious assault" in Green Lane, Edgware, around 17:30 BST (16:30 UTC). They found a man, later identified as Farooq, who had suffered multiple stab wounds and head injuries. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Farooq was pronounced dead at 18:37 BST.
Violence erupted in his hometown Karachi, Pakistan's main commercial city, following his murder. Several shops and vehicles were set on fire; however, no casualties were reported. MQM called for a 10 day strike to mourn Farooq's death.
