Sydney Muslims celebrate end of Ramadan

Sydney Muslims celebrate end of Ramadan,

Muslims gather outside the Lakemba Mosque for morning prayers to mark the end of Ramadan
Thousands of Muslim Australians have gathered in Sydney's south west for Eid ul-Fitr, a festival to mark the end of the month of Ramadan.

Premier Kristina Keneally and Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell have both addressed worshippers at Lakemba Mosque.

The Premier told the crowd that she admired the discipline involved in Ramadan - a month of fasting from dawn until dusk and a time of reflection.

She also promised her government would fully oppose a move to ban the wearing of the burka.

The crowd for morning prayers at Lakemba Mosque was so large that plastic sheeting was placed on the road outside as a giant prayer mat.

Eid ul-Fitr continues now with a day of fun and feasting.

Australian Muslims are among the first in the world to end Ramadan because the new moon first appears in the southern hemisphere.
