14 killed in Pakistan violence linked to London murde

At least 14 people have been killed in two days of violence in the Pakistani city of Karachi, officials say.

The unrest is thought to be linked to the recent murder in London of Imran Farooq, a founding member of the MQM party whose power base is in Karachi.

At least nine people were killed in day-long violence on Monday.

The latest clashes were sparked during the funeral of a man who was killed during Sunday's demonstrations. Eyewitnesses say shots were fired.

That in turn led to clashes between armed men and the security forces during the funeral procession.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says that MQM activists returning from funerals of people killed on Sunday fought with the paramilitary Rangers in at least two localities of Karachi - Nazimabad and Liaquatabad.

But the MQM accuses the government and the interior ministry in particular of being behind the violence.

The MQM's Dr Farooq Sattar told the media that the motive of the violence was "to paint the party in a bad light for the international community."

Meanwhile, gunmen riding motor-bikes have targeted a number of individuals in different parts of the city.

Those targeted included members of the MQM, President Zardari's Pakistan People's Party and the banned sectarian Sipah-e-Sahaba militant outfit.
