Ski resort

Ski resort,
A ski area is a developed recreational facility, usually on a mountain or large hill, containing ski trails and vital supporting services. It is common for a ski area to have food, rental equipment, parking facilities and a ski lift system catering to the sports of skiing and snowboarding. Normally located in high mountain areas (or at least on well-built-up hills) for adequate snow coverage, they have become ubiquitous in areas where skiing is a popular pastime. The paths are usually marked and known as runs, trails or pistes. Ski areas typically have one or more chairlifts for moving skiers rapidly to the top of hills, and to interconnect the various pistes. Rope tows can also be used on short slopes (usually beginner hills or bunny slopes). Larger ski areas may use gondolas or aerial trams for transportation across longer distances within the ski area.
A ski resort is a ski area plus amenities to make it a destination resort. This includes accommodations and other amenities adjacent to the ski area. Some ski resorts offer lodging options on the slopes themselves, with ski-in and ski-out access allowing guests to ski right up to the door. Ski resorts often have other activities, such as snowmobiling, sledding, horse-drawn sleds, dog-sledding, ice-skating, indoor or outdoor swimming, and hottubbing, game rooms, and local forms of entertainment, such as clubs, cinema, theatre and cabarets. Ski resorts may be self-contained and entirely devoted to ski tourism, (for example Vail ski resort) or they may be near a village or town that had a significant existence before the ski resort was built, such as Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Aspen, Colorado, or Park City, Utah.
Though skiing is less dangerous than many popular sports (such as bicycling, golf, football, swimming, and weightlifting), it is widely perceived as being high risk, in part due to significant accident rates as recently as the 1970s. Nevertheless, ski areas usually have at least a basic first aid facility, and some kind of ski patrol service to ensure that injured skiers are rescued. The ski patrol is usually responsible for rule enforcement, marking hazards, closing individual runs (if a sufficient level of hazard exists), and removing (dismissing) dangerous participants from the area.
A mountain resort is a place to holiday or vacation located in mountains. Common activities include skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating, as well as summer activities such as hiking, mountain biking, golf, and tennis.

Eid celebrations in Kerala

Kerala Muslims show off a distinguishable fashion in celebrating Eid. Being one significant fact among many other things that keep Muslims in Kerala distinct from Muslim populace in other Indian states, Eid celebration remains an incredible thing.

Despite being an exclusive Muslim festivity, under some unique social conditions in the State, Eid obtains a universal facet. Indeed it will be fairly not possible to separate Eid from a general platform of celebrations to a restricted ‘Muslim household’ event in the State.

Of course, Eid celebrations complete when it comes to be a festival of Non-Muslims too. Its typifications can simply be visible both in social life situations and office life. Muslims will serve their Non-Muslim neighbors with Eid special foods inviting them into Eid parties and functions. In offices, schools, colleges or whatever maybe there will be distinctive functions as part of Eid celebrations along with Eid foods.

In Kerala, as everywhere celebrations of Eid day commences with pleasant gathering at Eid Ghas - open grounds for special Eid prayers - in the early morning. Women and children make part of this propitious prayer event with overwhelming ecstasy. People will turn up wearing in new clothes with all verities of colors and design to add to the auspiciousness of the event.

After the Eid prayers, people will embrace each other to mark their pleasure and wishes for blessings of Allah. Sweets will be distributed. A number of entertainment programs both for children and older people are also some often-seen attractions of Eid prayer gatherings.

The State has also garnered fame for its special Eid dishes. Truly, each part of the State Malabar, Middle Kerala and South Kerala has their own varieties of food items for Eid celebrations.

Nevertheless, what keeps up Kerala absolutely distinct in Eid celebrations is its cultural implications. Keralites are a sect of people, not only famed for high-literacy rates, but for an exemplary cultural and religious harmony also. Festivities of each community and each religious sect will be celebrated as of an entire society. That makes things different at all here.

Eid message

Shadow International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander MP, has reminded people to remember those suffering in humanitarian crises in Pakistan and Niger at the same time as Muslims across Britain and the world celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr and the end of Ramadan.
He said:
“Eid is a very special time for Muslims across the UK, and all over the world – but as well as being a time for celebration, Eid is also a time for thoughtfulness, prayer and generosity.
“In common with Muslims across Britain, the situation of those suffering in places like Pakistan and Niger are foremost in many people’s minds.
“I am proud that once again the British people, including the Muslim community, have shown great thoughtfulness and generosity in responding to the humanitarian disaster in Pakistan – with over £47 million raised for the Disasters Emergency Committee Appeal.
“At the same time, millions continue to be affected by a double disaster of a food crisis and flooding in the Sahel – in particular in Niger. They are also in need of our support.
“I would urge Muslims and non-Muslims alike, if they haven’t already donated - to consider supporting the appeals for Pakistan and Niger at this special time.
“Eid Mubarak.”

Islamic Center Eid celebration

In past Eid celebrations, worshipers have stepped into the Lawrence Islamic Center and suddenly found themselves engulfed in the excitement of the holiday season. The entire place has been swarming with people. Loud voices and the smell of homemade foods have been wafting through the air as family and friends gleefully greet one another with a hug and the traditional saying of “Eid Mubarak,” or “Happy Eid.”“It is like a rainbow of colors,” said Khatija Vaid, a resident of Kansas City, Kan. “That’s the best way to describe it because everybody’s wearing different colors. Everyone’s really happy.”
“The first day is very early in the morning starting at 7,” said Ibrahim Alanqar, a senior from the Gaza Strip, and president of the KU Student Muslim Association. “People gather in the mosque or Islamic center and start praising God. Then around 8 we pray and hear a speech about how we celebrate Eid.”
In keeping with the fourth pillar of Islam, Eid participants also give a Zakat, or monetary donation, for those less fortunate than themselves.
“It’s money we pay so that poor people can also have a good Eid day,” Vaid said.
The holiday provides all types of people with the opportunity to unite under a single religious belief.
“I see so much diversity,” said Asma Zaidi, an associate professor of biochemistry. “There’s so much unity with Eid in that we’re all experiencing joy for the same cause.”
With this year’s holiday coinciding with the anniversary of 9/11, members of the Lawrence Islamic Center are well aware that some people might have mixed feelings about the celebration.
“I think right now it’s actually a good thing that we have all of these mixed opinions or biases,” Zaidi said. “It means that people are paying attention and once you get that attention you can start to focus on solutions. It’s time for us to explain our side of things.”

Eid mubarak

Eid mubarak,

ABU DHABI // Millions across the country celebrate Eid al Fitr today, and for many it will be their first as Muslims. The number of converts to Islam in Abu Dhabi increased by 25 per cent in the first half of 2010 over the same period last year, up from 486 to 559, according to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.
In Dubai the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department says the holy month was a popular time for conversions. More than 10,000 people there have become Muslim since 2005.

More than 800 mosques and musallas [prayer areas] across the country have been preparing for more than a month for this morning’s Eid prayers, due to take place at 6.30am.

This Eid, 209 mosques and musallas will hold prayers in Abu Dhabi, 85 in Bani Yas, 51 in the Western Region, 57 in Al Ain, 123 in Sharjah and Khorfakkan, 65 in Ajman, 12 in Umm Al Qaiwain, 54 in Ras al Khaimah and 41 in Fujairah, the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf) said.

In Dubai, more than 150 mosques and eight musallas have been prepared for the occasion. The musallas alone have a capacity of nearly 100,000 people, according to Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department.

In the capital yesterday, throngs of people flocked to the bus station to escape the city for the weekend. Private sector workers, many of whom normally have only one day off a week, wanted to take advantage of the long weekend. Even with double as many buses as usual laid on, the queues were still long as travellers rushed to visit family and friends in Al Ain and the Northern emirates.

“Maybe in one hour I will get a ticket,” said Sunil Jala, 30, a mechanical engineer from India, on his way to Sharjah. “I used to live there and all my friends are there,” he said.

Outside others waited for hours in the heat to board a bus. “There are too many passengers today,” said a driver, explaining the holiday rush was expected to continue today. “There are usually 24 buses for Dubai and now there are 50.”

The Eid sermon delivered this morning is the same throughout the UAE, and it usually focuses on the importance of maintaining good relationships with family, friends and neighbours. The direction and guidance section at Awqaf is responsible for selecting khatibs, or preachers, for the eid prayer.

Dr Omar al Khatib, the assistant director for Islamic affairs and charitable activities in Dubai, said preparation for Eid prayers starts at the beginning of Ramadan, when several specialised teams are formed to ensure Eid prayers go smoothly across the emirates.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, is due to lead the prayers at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque this morning. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Prime Minister, is due to do so at the Grand Eid Mussala in Dubai.

Emergency teams have been set up to deal with any urgent needs that occur on the day, such as broken air-conditioning units or sound systems, or power cuts.

“These people are equipped with all the necessary means to address an emergency situation that could occur on the day to ensure that everyone has a pleasant and spiritual prayer,” said Dr al Khatib.

Police and civil defence patrols have also been boosted in preparation for the holiday.
Ajman police will deploy 48 police patrol vehicles to help with traffic at mosques and musallas in the emirate. “We appeal to the public to be co-operative and follow all the traffic rules,” said Brigadier-General Ali Alwan, the director general of Ajman police.

In Abu Dhabi, Col Hussein al Harthi, the director of traffic and patrols, urged parents to keep an eye on their children and not to allow youngsters to play in the road unsupervised. He urged drivers to be extra vigilant, as the number of pedestrians increases as residents picnic in public parks.

Sharjah’s Eid preparations have included increasing the number of buses running over the holiday to 500. “Commuters will only have to wait about 15 minutes in order to catch a bus, instead of waiting up to 40 minutes,” said Majid al Shamsi, the assistant director general of Sharjah Transport.
