Merry Christmas To you

I would venture to guess there is not a parent alive who did not,at one time or another depending on the situation, say to one kiddo or another, "I can't wait until you have your own children. Then you'll see!"

When my children were very young one of those times was the annual visit to Santa Claus at G Fox, which not only included a lot of excitement but the annual tear-filled meltdown as they were hoisted onto Santa's lap for the annual picture.

I received this photo from my oldest yesterday of his three daughters, including poor Amelia who clearly was not happy about the situation. I could not help but smile because we have a very similar one of her dad, my son (circa 1972) crying his eyes out as the Jolly Old Elf tried his best to at least get the sobbing to stop long enough for a decent picture.

To all of you with children and family, hold them close and enjoy lots of smiles during the holidays. Time goes by too fast.

And Merry Christmas to readers and best of 2011 to you all. I have appreciated your support, comments, criticism and wonderful stories and good deeds.

P.S. The picture of all the happy kiddos with Claus? Some of my grandchildren who were more than happy to grin during an outing with Nana to Hartford Stage!

christmas rescued in Canada

christmas rescued in Canada,
Profile Facts-OTTAWA — Even in a country that prides itself at shrugging off winter, it was an exceptional storm. Several hundred drivers spent more than 24 hours stranded in their cars and trucks snowbound a major Ontario highway before the police and military rescuers extricated them on Tuesday.

More fortunate drivers were trapped in that most ubiquitous of Canadian landmarks, a Tim Hortons doughnut shop. And even an armed forces search and rescue team was stymied by the gusting winds at times.

By Tuesday afternoon, police and troops reported that they were removing significant numbers of people from the highway, No. 402, near Sarnia, Ontario. The highway was closed on Monday after high winds and rapidly falling snow squalls eliminated visibility.

A state of emergency remained in place on Tuesday and the Ontario Provincial Police estimated that about 360 vehicles holding an unknown number of passengers had spent the night on the highway.

The highway is part of the main route between Toronto and Chicago and the stranded drivers included Americans. While the area around Sarnia is familiar with sudden snow squalls, particularly in December when Lake Huron is not frozen, the intensity of the sudden storm swiftly overwhelmed snow-plow operators and police.

Chris Scott, a meteorologist for The Weather Network, a Canadian cable channel, said that the one to two feet of snow that fell along points of the highway was not extraordinary for the area. But when combined with relatively cold 10 degree Fahrenheit temperatures and 40 to 50 mile an hour winds, the storm became “exceptional.” The conditions created snow drifts exceeding six feet.

The highway largely runs through a sparsely settled rural area, leaving many drivers and their passengers with only their vehicles for shelter, although some farmers used tractors to perform impromptu rescues.

Police, often traveling by snowmobile, could do little more than encourage drivers clustered in small groups along the highway to consolidate into a single vehicle for greater warmth.

.On Tuesday morning, a Canadian Forces Hercules search and rescue plane was scanning the ground for vehicles and two military helicopters began airlifting people from cars. Police and troops had brought 237 people to shelters by the early evening and snowplows were slowly clearing the road.

The initial fright created by the whiteout turned to tedium for many drivers, particularly after 24 hours.

“What can I do?,” one driver, Colin Stewart, told the Canadian Press news agency. “I’m not impressed — it’s Canada.”

Mr. Stewart later reported later in the day that he was on his way again.

Christmas Carol:Theatre Review

First edition frontispiece and title page (1843),
In its 35th year at Actors Theatre of Louisville, Charles Dickens' “A Christmas Carol” must walk a delicate line to avoid feeling rote. As is fitting for Dickens' classic Victorian tale of personal redemption, every year's show must feel like a new day, while not reinventing the wheel.

Associate artistic director Sean Daniels has, in his fourth year directing, now hit that sweet spot between the comfort of tradition and the novelty of fresh magic.

Dickens' story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the man who allowed his fear of poverty to nurture his greed and kill his compassion and heart until Christmas Eve visits by spirits show him the error of his ways, has been adapted for everyone from Jim Henson's Muppets to the Jetsons, but Barbara Field's stage play feels like ours. Because of Actors' audiences' long relationship with this show, care must be taken when adding or subtracting from the play.
Charles John Huffam Dickens,

The most notable change in this year's production is the return of the narrator (Fred Major), whose dry delivery allows the author's famous wit to shine. When paired opposite Scrooge (Bill McNulty, in his 10th season in the lead), their words practically glow with the original intensity of Dickens' text.

Indeed, McNulty's heartfelt portrayal of the meanest man in London grows stronger with every production, and it is his presence that anchors the play, his haunted face moving from darkness to light that moves us to tears and our own heartfelt resolutions by the end.

The addition of live music in 2008 added nearly 20 Christmas carols to the play, shoring up its timeless appeal, but in this year's production the music feels more organic to the show than ever. Daniels added a little spectacle for balance in the form of a Ghost of Christmas Past (Lindsey Noel Whiting, the acrobatic Chicago actress last seen at Actors in “Lookingglass Alice”) who twirls and twists in gleaming aerial silks as she leads Scrooge through memories both warm and cold, offering a touching emotional depth to the spirit along the way.
